Bilaspur Rear-End Train Collision Kills 11, Probe Launched

Post by : Raina Nasser

A rear-end collision in central India overnight left at least 11 people dead and roughly 20 others injured. The crash occurred near Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh when a moving passenger train struck a stationary freight rake from behind, with one passenger coach coming to rest atop a cargo wagon and complicating rescue efforts.

Rescue teams worked for several hours to bring the overturned coach down and recover victims. The driver of the passenger train was among those killed; the assistant driver, a woman, sustained critical injuries and was taken to a private hospital. Other injured passengers are receiving care at nearby medical facilities, and emergency operations concluded early Wednesday as services through the corridor were restored.

Indian Railways has opened an official inquiry into the causes of the accident and announced monetary assistance for victims' families and the wounded. Chhattisgarh chief Vishnu Deo Sai publicly conveyed his condolences to those affected.

The incident underscores persistent safety challenges on India’s rail network, which carries more than 12 million passengers daily across around 14,000 trains and some 64,000 kilometres of track. Despite modernization efforts, annual accidents remain frequent, often linked to human error or aging signalling infrastructure. The 2023 eastern India disaster, which resulted in more than 280 fatalities, is a recent reminder of the stakes.

This collision adds to calls for accelerated upgrades to track infrastructure and signalling systems, tighter operational safeguards, and stronger oversight to reduce the risk of future tragedies.
