Expert Nutritionist from Bengaluru Offers Strategies to Mitigate Late-Night Dinner Effects

Post by : Saif Nasser

In today’s hectic world, late dinners due to work commitments or busy schedules are often unavoidable. Bengaluru nutritionist Anupama Menon has provided valuable advice on mitigating the health impacts associated with late-night eating in a recent Instagram post titled “Late shift? Here is how to fix the damage.”

According to Anupama, establishing a proper fasting window is crucial. She recommends that individuals take note of when they finish dinner and refrain from eating for at least 12 hours afterward. This fasting period allows the digestive system to recover. For instance, if dinner concludes at 10 pm, the next meal should ideally be around 10 am. For women over 40 or individuals under pressure, a fasting duration of 12 to 12.5 hours is advised, while those with a balanced routine may extend it to 14 hours.

The nutritionist also emphasizes a golden rule: to eat at least two hours before bedtime for easier digestion and improved sleep quality. Thus, for a dinner at 9 pm, aim to sleep by 11 pm. For those whose work schedules or travel arrangements impede early meals, she recommends having a nutritious meal earlier in the day, reserving lighter options such as soup, salad, or a small snack when arriving home late, to avoid discomfort during sleep.

Anupama’s tips extend to night shift workers as well. For example, if work ends at 4 am, a person might consider having a full dinner around 10:30–11 pm, a light snack around 1:30–2 am, followed by sleep at 5 am, and waking up around 11 am or 12 pm for lunch. This approach helps maintain bodily rhythms, even with inverted day-night cycles. While not flawless, it serves as a practical guide for those compelled to adhere to unconventional hours.

Ultimately, Anupama asserts that no advice can entirely replace regular meal schedules and proper sleep patterns. However, in challenging times, effective management of late-night eating is possible. Her insights provide a hopeful perspective for office workers, night-shift staff, and busy individuals on maintaining health despite late dining.
