Ben Sasse Reveals Stage-Four Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis

Post by : Mina Rahman

Ben Sasse, who served as a U.S. senator from Nebraska from 2015 to 2023, has publicly announced his diagnosis of stage-four metastatic pancreatic cancer. In a poignant post on social media, he described this diagnosis as a "death sentence," yet emphasized his resolve to combat the illness.

At 53 years old, Sasse is known for his principled stance in politics. He was notably one of the few Republicans to support the impeachment of former President Donald Trump in the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riot. Throughout his Senate tenure, he frequently advocated for Congressional integrity, asserting that “some lines cannot be crossed.”

Holding degrees from Harvard and Yale, Sasse's career spans beyond politics into academia, having served as president of the University of Florida after his Senate term. However, he stepped down from this position in July 2024 to assist his wife, who recently had a stroke. Together, they are parents to three children.

Sasse chose to share his cancer diagnosis during the Advent season, a period of reflection for many Christians. He conveyed a message of hope and resilience, stating, “I’m not going down without a fight.”

Amid these health challenges, Sasse has also faced scrutiny regarding his financial decisions as university president, with an audit indicating potential misuse of university funds—a claim he firmly denies.

Through this difficult chapter, Sasse’s story underscores his faith and tenacity, drawing sympathy and support from across the community.
