The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eager for former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to take part in the forthcoming 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy, set to run from December 24 to January 18. This premier domestic one-day competition serves as a crucial stage for players to demonstrate their form ahead of international events.
A report from the Times of India indicates that the BCCI would have preferred if both players had the opportunity to play in England over the summer. As they gear up for the upcoming domestic season, the Board aims to encourage Rohit and Kohli to join their respective teams for the Vijay Hazare Trophy next month.
Rohit Sharma has confirmed he will be available for Mumbai’s matches in the tournament. However, no official word has been given on Kohli’s participation. Having not played the VHT for Delhi in over ten years, there is potential for Kohli to represent his state again, following his single Ranji Trophy appearance earlier this year under Ayush Badoni at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The BCCI is also expected to hold a meeting with selectors and team management post the India-South Africa ODI series, happening from November 30 to December 6, to outline future plans for Rohit and Kohli as they eye the 2027 ODI World Cup. This gathering aims to clarify expectations and prepare for any situations where either player may not be available.
Sources indicate that the management is considering backup players in case they are needed. An insider emphasized that clarity is vital for players of Rohit and Kohli’s caliber. “It’s essential for players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to understand what is expected from them and the current management's view on their roles. Uncertainty isn’t an option,” the source stated.
While both players contributed runs in the third ODI in Australia, the series had already been lost, and they seemed to lack form in the first two matches. Such performances highlight the importance of allowing these senior players to regain their form and confidence through domestic cricket ahead of the international season.
The upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy presents an ideal opportunity for Rohit and Kohli to enhance their match fitness and mentor younger players within their squads. With the BCCI focusing on constructing a robust team for the 2027 ODI World Cup, involving experienced players in domestic tournaments is strategically significant to ensure leadership and experience are present throughout the team.
Including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli would not only enrich the tournament but also motivate emerging cricketers from Mumbai and Delhi to excel. Their participation will be closely monitored by fans and cricket analysts alike, offering insights into India’s ODI strategies as the World Cup approaches.
