The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has asked Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision on Saturday, stating that KKR will be allowed to sign a replacement player once Rahman is removed.
According to Saikia, the decision comes in light of recent incidents in Bangladesh, where several members of the Hindu community have reportedly been killed. These events have triggered public and political calls in India to reconsider the participation of Bangladeshi players in the IPL this year.
Rahman was picked by KKR in the IPL mini-auction in Abu Dhabi for INR 9.20 crore after an intense bidding battle with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Following the signing, both KKR and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan faced criticism from political leaders for not considering national sentiments, amid rising tensions between India and Bangladesh. BJP and Shiv Sena leaders publicly expressed their displeasure, with some accusing Khan of being insensitive to the ongoing unrest.
Rahman’s IPL career spans several teams, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings. In the 2025 season, he played three matches for Delhi Capitals, picking up four wickets. Overall, Rahman has played 60 IPL matches and taken 65 wickets. After being selected by KKR, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had also issued him a no-objection certificate, allowing him to skip a home series against New Zealand to participate fully in the IPL.
While the BCCI has taken this step regarding IPL participation, it has not commented on India’s scheduled tour of Bangladesh in September 2026, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is. The tour, announced by the BCB, will see the Indian team arrive in Dhaka on August 28. The series had been postponed from last year due to unrest in Bangladesh.
The BCCI’s decision highlights how cricket, politics, and public sentiment often intersect. KKR now has the opportunity to sign a replacement player, and the team’s management is expected to act swiftly to maintain a strong squad for the IPL 2026 season.
This move also underlines the broader sensitivity surrounding sports and international relations. While players are often selected based on talent and performance, geopolitical developments can influence decisions in high-profile tournaments like the IPL. For Mustafizur Rahman, this means he will not be part of the KKR squad this season, despite his previous contributions and experience in the league.
The IPL 2026 is set to be closely watched, not only for cricketing performances but also for how teams and governing bodies navigate political and social concerns while building competitive squads.
