In a pivotal diplomatic maneuver, the interim government of Bangladesh has officially sought India's cooperation for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina currently resides in New Delhi after being sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal over her administration's actions. She fled Bangladesh in August 2024 amid the student-driven "July Uprising," which led to her government’s collapse.
This request marks Bangladesh's third formal plea to India, following submissions in December 2024 and after the tribunal delivered its verdict. The call for extradition also includes Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, a former home minister sentenced to death, who is believed to be in India, along with former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, now serving a five-year sentence after testifying.
Bangladesh's foreign ministry reiterated that the extradition treaty binds India to return convicted individuals. Officials have warned that a failure to comply would be viewed as a significant act of hostility and a serious setback to justice in Bangladesh.
The political landscape in Bangladesh remains unstable following Hasina's ousting. Reports from the UN indicate that the crackdown during the July-August 2024 protests resulted in nearly 1,400 casualties, leading to the tribunal's indictments. In the wake of this turmoil, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has stepped in as the leader of the interim government, striving to restore stability.
Despite prevailing tensions, recent diplomatic talks suggest a possibility for cautious dialogue. Bangladesh's National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman has engaged with his Indian counterparts in New Delhi, and invitations have been extended to India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval for a visit to Dhaka. Analysts indicate that these developments will not only challenge bilateral ties but also test India’s approach to extradition matters concerning prominent political figures.
As developments unfold, significant attention is on how New Delhi will respond to this renewed request from Dhaka, with potential repercussions for regional diplomacy and Bangladesh's precarious political state.
