Bangladesh Replaced by Scotland in T20 World Cup 2026 After Security Dispute

Post by : Saif Nasser

Bangladesh has been removed from the T20 World Cup 2026 after refusing to travel to India for the event. The decision came after weeks of discussions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), which ultimately concluded that there was no verified security threat for the team in India.

The dispute began when Bangladesh raised concerns about participating in matches in India, citing the recent exit of star player Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League and potential security risks. The BCB requested that its matches be shifted to co-host Sri Lanka. The ICC, after reviewing the concerns, did not approve the request and issued a 24-hour deadline for Bangladesh to confirm their participation.

During multiple rounds of dialogue spanning over three weeks, tensions ran high. Reports revealed that during a video conference meeting, BCB chairman Aminul Islam lost his temper while expressing his refusal to accept the ICC’s reasoning. Despite the heated exchanges, the ICC maintained that it could not verify any credible threat and needed to uphold the published schedule of matches.

Bangladesh had been scheduled to play four matches in Kolkata and Mumbai, in Group C alongside England, Italy, Nepal, and the West Indies. With their withdrawal, Scotland has been given the spot. Scotland qualified as the highest-ranked team that had not already secured a place in the T20 World Cup.

The ICC stated that it had conducted the discussions in a transparent and constructive manner. It emphasized that the decision to replace Bangladesh with Scotland followed careful consideration of the security assessments and the broader implications for the tournament.

This episode highlights the challenges international cricket faces when security concerns and team decisions clash with event schedules. While Bangladesh’s stance was firm, the ICC prioritized maintaining the tournament’s structure, giving Scotland a historic opportunity to compete on the global stage.
