Taiwan has unveiled plans to boost its defenses on the Pratas Islands in response to escalating pressures from China. This decision coincides with a notable uptick in Chinese maritime operations around these islands, particularly over the last year.
Kuan Bi-ling has reported that China is intensifying its “gray zone” tactics—activities that are non-combative, like coast guard patrols, aimed at exerting control without direct aggression. These operations are increasingly manifesting around the Pratas Islands.
Located over 400 kilometers from Taiwan, the islands are viewed as strategically precarious due to their distance and limited defensive infrastructure. Security control is primarily managed by Taiwan’s coast guard, rather than its armed forces.
Taiwan has proactive measures underway to enhance the islands' infrastructure, which includes upgrading port facilities and outlining plans to deploy vessels with improved operational capabilities. Officials have also indicated that work on a comprehensive defense system is in progress, though specific details remain classified.
Recent events have amplified tensions, exemplified by a Chinese reconnaissance drone's incursion over the islands earlier this year. Taiwan termed this action as provocative, echoing rising apprehension about Beijing's designs in the region.
Authorities assert that control over the Pratas Islands is of paramount strategic importance for China, leading to accelerated efforts in Taiwan to enhance both peacetime readiness and wartime response abilities.
Taiwan has acknowledged the potential for its coast guard vessels to be integrated into military operations should the situation demand, utilizing newer vessels such as the Anping-class corvettes, which can be outfitted with advanced armaments.
