Ayush Mhatre Appointed Captain of India for Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai

Ayush Mhatre Appointed Captain of India for Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai

Post by : Mara Rahim

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled a 15-member squad for the ACC Men's Under-19 Asia Cup commencing on December 12 in Dubai. Mumbai's promising batter Ayush Mhatre will lead the Indian team, with Vihaan Malhotra appointed as vice-captain. The tournament features a one-day format showcasing Asia's top youth teams. The squad also includes notable talents like Vaibhav Suryavanshi, enhancing the team's top-order strength. This selection underscores India's commitment to nurturing young talent, reflected in the inclusion of two wicketkeepers, Abhigyan Kundu and Harvansh Singh.

India is grouped with Pakistan and two qualifiers in Group A, while Group B consists of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and another qualifier. The campaign starts for India on December 12 against one of these qualifiers.

Despite his new leadership role, Mhatre's recent form has been a mixed bag. During IPL 2025, he excelled with the Chennai Super Kings, scoring 240 runs across seven matches, effectively stepping in for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad. His impressive strike rate of nearly 189 during the IPL highlighted his explosive batting style, earning him accolades and a spot among India’s upcoming cricket stars.

However, international outings have proven challenging for Mhatre; he tallied only 27 runs in four matches during a tour of England. Nevertheless, he rebounded in the Youth Test series, securing the top score with 340 runs, showcasing resilience and adaptability across formats.

On the Australian tour, Mhatre struggled again with scores of just 10 runs in three one-day games and 38 runs in Youth Tests. His domestic season was inconsistent too, with only 156 runs from four first-class matches, including a game for India A against South Africa A. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he managed just 18 runs against Railways.

Despite these fluctuations, the selectors have entrusted Mhatre with the captaincy due to his leadership qualities and competitive experience. The Asia Cup presents a crucial opportunity for him to regain his batting rhythm and demonstrate his capabilities both as a leader and a player.

The Under-19 Asia Cup is renowned for unearthing future cricketing talent. Historically, India excels in this tournament and, with a well-rounded squad, aims to assert dominance again this year. The team’s robust bowling, skilled all-rounders, and technically proficient batters instil confidence as they gear up for the competition.

The squad includes Ayush Mhatre (capt), Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Vihaan Malhotra (vice-capt), Vedant Trivedi, Abhigyan Kundu (wk), Harvansh Singh (wk), Yuvraj Gohil, Kanishk Chouhan, Khilan A. Patel, Naman Pushpak, D. Deepesh, Henil Patel, Kishan Kumar Singh, Udhav Mohan, Aaron George.

With formidable rivals like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, India’s young talents will face significant challenges in Dubai. This tournament will not only spotlight their abilities but also aid selectors in identifying players ready for higher levels of competition.

As Ayush Mhatre steps into leadership, the Asia Cup serves as a vital platform to guide India and rebuild his batting confidence. The team’s mix of talent and determination could pave the way for India to make a powerful statement in this year’s tournament.
