Brown University Gunman Still at Large as Manhunt Enters Fourth Day

Post by : Saif Nasser

Authorities in Providence, Rhode Island, are continuing their search for the gunman who killed two students at Brown University, three days after the tragic classroom shooting. The manhunt has now entered its fourth day, and residents and students remain on edge as officials work to identify the suspect.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Providence Police played several video clips from neighborhood cameras showing a person in dark clothes and a face mask, believed to be the shooter. Police hope someone from the public may recognize the individual by his posture, movements, or mannerisms. Evidence suggests the suspect was in the area as early as 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, hours before the attack, indicating he may have been “casing” the location.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said authorities are confident the person in the video is the shooter but have no evidence yet about the motive behind the attack. Authorities have received over 200 tips and are reviewing them carefully.

The shooting occurred in an unlocked engineering and physics building while exams were in progress. The gunman used a 9mm firearm inside a classroom and then fled the scene. The attack left two students dead and eight others injured, with seven hospitalized, including one in critical condition.

Brown University has nearly 11,000 students and has taken steps to strengthen security after the incident. Campus safety staff numbers have doubled, and building access has been restricted. Many students left the city after the university canceled classes and exams for the rest of the week.

Residents in the College Hill neighborhood are cautious, keeping doors locked while police continue door-to-door inquiries for camera footage. Some families, like Patrick Moran’s, are keeping children home as a safety measure. Public schools in Providence remain open, but after-school activities have been canceled.

The two students who lost their lives were 19-year-old Ella Cook, a sophomore from Mountain Brook, Alabama, and 18-year-old Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman from Virginia. Cook was active in the College Republicans and known for her leadership at the university, while Umurzokov had aspirations to become a neurosurgeon and was remembered by his family as kind-hearted and helpful.

Authorities urge the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the shooter. Mayor Brett Smiley stressed that there have been no further credible threats, but the community remains cautious as the search continues.
