Australia has come together to honour extraordinary courage after Ahmed al Ahmed, widely known as the “Bondi Hero,” was handed more than 1.65 million U.S. dollars collected through public donations. The money was raised by tens of thousands of people after Ahmed risked his life to stop a gunman during a deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
The donation was presented to Ahmed on Friday while he was recovering in a Sydney hospital. An oversized cheque was handed to him by Zachery Dereniowski, a social media influencer who helped organise the online fundraising campaign. Videos of the moment, shared on social media, showed Ahmed’s humble reaction as he quietly asked whether he truly deserved the support.
Ahmed’s actions during the attack are believed to have saved many lives. When gunfire broke out, he first took cover behind parked cars. Then, seeing an opportunity, he charged at one of the attackers from behind, wrestled the rifle away, and forced him to the ground. During the incident, Ahmed was shot, apparently by a second gunman, and later required surgery. He remains in hospital as he continues his recovery.
More than 43,000 people from around the world donated to the fundraiser. Support came from ordinary citizens as well as well-known figures. Billionaire investor Bill Ackman donated nearly 100,000 Australian dollars and shared the fundraiser online. Australia’s prime minister and the premier of New South Wales also visited Ahmed in hospital to personally thank him for his bravery.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Ahmed shared a message of unity and peace. He thanked everyone who donated and urged people to stand together as human beings. He said he acted from the heart, explaining that the beach was filled with families, children, and people enjoying a peaceful celebration, and they deserved to be safe.
Ahmed expressed strong pride in Australia, calling it one of the best countries in the world. He said people should not remain silent in the face of violence and must protect one another. His words have been widely shared, touching many who see him as a symbol of courage and compassion.
Originally from Syria’s Idlib province, Ahmed moved to Australia nearly 20 years ago in search of a better life. Now 43, he is a father of two and runs a small business. His life story and brave actions have turned him into a national figure admired across communities.
The Bondi Beach shooting killed 15 people and injured dozens more. The attack happened during Hanukkah celebrations at the popular beach. Authorities say the attack was carried out by a father and son, with the older man shot dead by police and the younger left critically injured.
As Australia continues to grieve, Ahmed al Ahmed’s bravery stands out as a powerful reminder of humanity in the face of violence. The overwhelming support he received shows how deeply people value courage, kindness, and the willingness to protect others at any cost.
