Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has made history by becoming the first sitting Australian prime minister to get married while in office. On Saturday, he married his long-time partner, Jodie Haydon, in a private ceremony held in Canberra, the nation’s capital. The wedding took place at The Lodge, the official residence of the prime minister, and was attended only by family members and close friends.
The couple had been engaged since Valentine’s Day last year, but the date and details of the wedding were kept secret until the ceremony. In a statement, Albanese expressed his joy, saying, “We are absolutely delighted to share our love and commitment to spending our future lives together, in front of our family and closest friends.”
Jodie Haydon has been a visible partner in Albanese’s public life. She accompanied him during his 2022 election campaign and was also present when his Labor party secured a strong victory in May this year. For the wedding, Haydon chose a dress designed by Sydney-based brand “Romance Was Born,” while Albanese wore a suit from MJ Bale. Adding a personal touch to the ceremony, Haydon’s five-year-old niece, Ella, served as the flower girl, and Albanese’s dog, Toto, acted as the ring bearer.
Guests were offered beer from a specially designed can by Willie the Boatman, a brewery based in Sydney’s Inner West. After exchanging their vows, the newlyweds walked down the aisle to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)” and later shared their first dance to Frank Sinatra’s classic, “The Way You Look Tonight.”
The couple plans to honeymoon within Australia, from Monday to Friday of next week, with all expenses covered privately by them. This intimate celebration reflects both their personal style and their wish for a quiet, family-focused ceremony. Albanese’s historic wedding has attracted attention across the country, highlighting a unique moment in Australian political history where a sitting prime minister celebrated a major personal milestone while continuing to serve in office.
