Australia is preparing to roll out one of the most stringent online safety measures globally, imposing a nationwide prohibition on social media access for individuals aged 16 and under, effective December 10. This initiative cements Australia as the pioneering nation to entirely restrict minors from engaging with major digital platforms, enforcing significant penalties on companies that do not comply.
The eSafety Commissioner has confirmed that Twitch, owned by Amazon, will be incorporated into the list of prohibited platforms. Officials explained that the platform qualifies as a social media service due to its focus on livestreaming and interactive content, which facilitates real-time interaction among users, including minors.
Twitch has already shared its compliance strategy, stating that all accounts associated with users aged 16 and under will be disabled starting January 9. Moreover, the platform will block the creation of new underage accounts immediately when the regulations come into force next month.
In contrast, Pinterest has been exempted from this ban. Regulators concluded that, despite allowing limited online interactions, its core function revolves around image curation and idea sharing rather than social interaction, thus not fitting within the new guidelines.
Earlier this month, the ban was broadened to include Reddit and the livestreaming service Kick. Other significant global platforms already affected comprise Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, and YouTube. The commissioner noted that no additional evaluations will occur before the rollout on December 10, providing companies with a brief period to take “reasonable steps” to enforce these new age limitations. Non-compliance could incur fines of up to A$49.5 million.
Australia’s initiative represents a pivotal change in global digital regulations, indicating a more forceful approach to safeguarding younger users from online dangers as the country gears up to introduce these comprehensive rules.
