Auckland Man Detained After Ingesting $20K Faberge Egg

In an audacious act reminiscent of a cinematic plot, a 32-year-old man in Auckland, New Zealand, has elevated luxury theft by swallowing a diamond-studded Faberge egg. This remarkable incident took place last week at a prestigious jewellery store in the nation’s largest city.

Authorities swiftly apprehended the suspect before he could make his getaway. However, the precious egg remains inside him, with police observing him closely as they await the egg's natural exit. This stolen artefact, valued at around USD 20,000, is a limited-edition locket inspired by the James Bond movie “Octopussy,” which centers on the theft of a rare Faberge egg.

The design of the egg reflects the grandeur of the original pieces crafted by the House of Faberge, celebrated since the late 19th century for their exquisitely made, gem-adorned Easter eggs. The item features an 18k gold lattice design embellished with blue sapphires and white diamonds arranged in a floral motif, with a small golden octopus hidden inside, nodding to its film inspiration.

While the thief currently hosts the valuable treasure within, investigators are focused on his wellbeing and the eventual recovery of the egg. Experts note that while ingesting such objects poses significant risks, careful medical supervision often facilitates retrieval without requiring surgery.
