Arsenal Triumphs Over Crystal Palace in Penalty Drama, Advances to Semifinals

Post by : Mina Rahman

Arsenal secured their spot in the League Cup semifinals following a nail-biting 8-7 penalty shootout win against Crystal Palace, which ended in a 1-1 draw after regulation.

The match turned dramatically for Palace's Maxence Lacroix, who had a difficult night; he scored an own goal in the 80th minute and missed his penalty, giving Arsenal the upper hand as all other penalties were successfully converted.

Dominating possession for much of the match, the Premier League leaders finally took the lead when Lacroix inadvertently sent the ball into his own net while trying to clear a corner. Nonetheless, Palace displayed resilience and managed to equalize in stoppage time, with captain Marc Guehi pouncing on a loose ball after a free kick, taking the match to penalties.

Goalkeeper Walter Benitez was pivotal for Palace, making several key saves, including two from Noni Madueke and a powerful header from Gabriel Jesus, keeping the game competitive.

After halftime, Palace showed noticeable improvement but struggled to generate significant opportunities until their urgent late goal.

The match, postponed from the previous week, was pushed back to accommodate Palace’s UEFA Conference League schedule.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal's manager, commended his team's composure amidst the late equalizer, noting the margin of victory should have been larger compared to their recent league game against Everton.

Oliver Glasner, Palace's manager, praised his squad's enhanced second-half display and credited Benitez for his vital saves, mentioning that the team will take a brief pause to recuperate from their demanding fixtures.

Next up, Arsenal will host Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, while Crystal Palace is set to face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Arsenal gears up for a League Cup semifinal clash with Chelsea.
