Arsenal’s perfect run in the Champions League continues, with six wins from six matches virtually guaranteeing a top-eight finish. This ensures the Gunners will bypass the knockout playoffs in February and progress directly to the round of 16 in March. Meanwhile, Brugge remain on just four points, facing a serious risk of missing the knockout stage.
The night at Jan Breydelstadion proved rewarding for Arsenal, who arrived with a squad weakened by injuries after a defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend. Manager Mikel Arteta made five changes to refresh his team, including handing Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus his first appearance in nearly a year. Jesus came on as a substitute in the second half, featuring for thirty minutes.
It was Noni Madueke who opened the scoring in spectacular fashion in the 25th minute. Picking up the ball near the halfway line, he weaved past defenders before unleashing a thunderbolt into the top corner, leaving the home goalkeeper with no chance.
Brugge threatened an equalizer in the 39th minute when Aleksandar Stankovic curled a shot narrowly wide, and the home side continued to press, only to be denied by David Raya’s crucial saves from both Stankovic and Christos Tzolis before halftime.
However, Arsenal struck early in the second half as Madueke doubled his tally just two minutes after the restart. A precise cross from Martin Zubimendi found him unmarked at the back post, leaving the Brugge defense flat-footed.
“The first goal was really nice, the second a tap-in, but the first one was special,” Madueke said. “We’re fighting on all fronts. We believe we can win this competition and the league. Things are looking good right now.”
Nine minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli extended Arsenal’s lead, cutting in from the left and driving a powerful right-footed strike into the net. This marked his fifth goal in five Champions League appearances this season, keeping up his impressive scoring streak.
Gabriel Jesus almost made a dream comeback in the 79th minute, hitting the crossbar after a strong run, while teenage sensation Marli Salmon made his first-team debut at right-back in the closing seven minutes, becoming the fourth youngest player in Arsenal history to feature.
Brugge, meanwhile, were battling internal upheaval after the sudden Monday sacking of coach Nicky Hayen. Ivan Leko, returning for a second spell, took charge of the side in a turbulent environment.
“We faced a very strong team, one of the best in the world,” Stankovic admitted. “We tried to play our game, but against teams like Arsenal, you must take your chances quickly. We are young and still learning.”
