The University of Arizona's men's basketball team continued its impressive run this season, claiming a decisive 103-73 triumph over Denver on Monday in Tucson. Ranked No. 2 nationally, the Wildcats exhibited their dominance from the outset, maintaining control throughout the game. Freshman guards Brayden Burries and Ivan Kharchenkov emerged as standout performers, each contributing 20 points to the scoreboard. This victory keeps Arizona's record flawless at 6-0, solidifying their status among the elite in college basketball.
The youthful talent of Arizona shone brightly during the contest, with freshman Dwayne Aristode adding 17 points and Koa Peat contributing 12 before fouling out. Their complementary scoring placed Denver under constant pressure. Tobe Awaka also played a notable role off the bench, scoring 12 points and grabbing an impressive 15 rebounds, highlighting Arizona's grip on the game.
A key factor in Arizona's success was their inside game, where they out-rebounded Denver 50-29, generating numerous second-chance scoring opportunities. The Wildcats dominated the paint, racking up a staggering 50-22 advantage in points scored near the basket. Burries led the way with seven rebounds, while Kharchenkov and Aristode contributed five each, ensuring a comfortable lead for Arizona.
Exhibiting outstanding teamwork, Arizona moved the ball effectively and created countless easy scoring chances, registering 26 assists on their 41 field goals. This level of cooperation kept Denver’s defense off balance, with Anthony Dell’Orso topping the assist chart with seven.
Though Denver fought to stay in the game, they struggled to keep pace with Arizona’s rapid attacks. Carson Johnson led the Pioneers with 18 points, and Zane Nelson had 17 points but saw his efforts fall short against the Wildcats' potent offense and staunch defense.
Arizona jumped out of the gates with energetic play, netting the first 13 points before Denver managed their first field goal after nearly seven minutes. Arizona then went on a stunning 19-2 run, widening their lead to 33-7. By halftime, the Wildcats boasted a commanding 56-28 lead after shooting over 52 percent from the field. Burries and Kharchenkov alone scored 24 points at halftime, even outscoring the entire Denver team at a critical juncture.
Continuing their dominance in the second half, Arizona maintained nearly 57 percent shooting for the game, including making 12 of 28 attempts from beyond the arc. Aristode sunk four three-pointers, while Burries added three, with the team executing a remarkable 12 straight field goals.
With this decisive win, Arizona reaffirms its position as one of the top contenders in college basketball. With their mix of youthful exuberance, cohesive teamwork, and aggressive scoring, they are a formidable challenge for any opponent. Burries, Kharchenkov, and their teammates will look to maintain this momentum against tougher opponents in the future.
