Archer Aviation has revealed a pivotal partnership with Saudi Arabia’s The Helicopter Company (THC) and Red Sea Global, both of which are backed by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). This initiative aims to provide a real-world testing ground for the Midnight air taxis in Saudi Arabia.
The agreement entails creating a controlled "sandbox" environment to conduct test flights of Archer’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This project seeks to assess the operational functionality of the Midnight, its integration with current infrastructure, regulatory considerations, and public acceptance in Saudi Arabia.
Why this initiative is significant:
Red Sea Global, known for developing upscale tourism projects like the Red Sea resorts, will spearhead this testing program.
This collaboration is indicative of Saudi Arabia’s growing aspirations in regenerative tourism, replacing traditional fossil-fuel powered seaplanes with eco-friendly eVTOLs in support of environmental objectives and modern travel dynamics.
For Archer, this partnership opens the door for expansion beyond its primary US markets, with Saudi Arabia's extensive PIF-fueled development initiatives offering an innovative testing arena.
Upcoming plans:
Test flights for the Midnight aircraft will occur under strict regulatory supervision within this sandbox.
Depending on the test outcomes regarding safety and public perception, there may be an extensive rollout, particularly focused on connecting airports with resorts or urban areas.
While Archer has yet to reveal financial details or the quantity of aircraft involved, the initial deployment is expected to be limited.
Broader implications:
This venture is more than just about aerial taxis; it represents Saudi Arabia’s commitment to adopting next-gen transport in line with Vision 2030, seeing advanced air mobility as a chance to transform tourism, lower carbon emissions, and enhance high-speed travel options.
For Archer, this agreement reinforces its global presence, as the company has already formed other partnerships across Asia. Testing in Saudi Arabia further connects it to a market rich in capital and progressive in outlook.
