A severe weather event abruptly concluded the Arab Cup third-place playoff on Friday. The UAE Football Association verified that the match between the UAE and Saudi Arabia was officially called off following FIFA's directive. The matchup, scheduled at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, was deemed unsafe after relentless rain left the playing field significantly waterlogged.
The game had reached halftime with the score still at zero when torrential downpours interrupted the second half. As water accumulated in critical areas of the field, officials halted the match for over 150 minutes. Approximately 100 personnel were deployed to address the flooding, working tirelessly for over two and a half hours to drain the pitch, yet play conditions remained perilous.
Referee Cristian Garay collaborated with the match commissioner, enacting two additional 30-minute breaks in an attempt to resume the game. Despite significant efforts, including pumps and equipment set up by stadium staff, the pitch could not be secured for safe play.
When resumption was suggested, both teams' head coaches—Olaroiu Cosmin for the UAE and Hervé Renard for Saudi Arabia—refused, citing increased injury risks with the current conditions. Their consensus ultimately led to the organizing committee's decision to cancel the match and begin preparations for outlining forthcoming actions.
This event has highlighted a notable regulatory void, with existing tournament rules not addressing how to manage a halted match due to extreme weather during this stage. Officials confirmed that a draw will not decide third place, and a replay the following day seems improbable, given the tournament's conclusion with the final match between Jordan and Morocco scheduled for Friday evening.
Before the game was paused, both teams exhibited a vigorous pace. The UAE shifted tactics by adopting a 4-4-2 formation to create wider attacking options. Bruno Oliveira and Sultan Adel exploited the flanks, diverging from their usual 4-2-3-1 strategy, nearly resulting in a goal when Ali Saleh's run set up a close chance that Yahya Al Ghassani could not convert. Saudi Arabia also posed threats, including a disallowed goal by Salem Al Dawsari.
With both teams eager for a podium finish, the storm disrupted their ambitions. Prioritizing player safety left no avenue for rescheduling. A definitive ruling on how third place will be awarded is anticipated after a thorough review by officials.
