Tragic Shooting of Teacher at Aligarh Muslim University Sparks Outrage

Post by : Mina Rahman

An appalling murder occurred on Wednesday night at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh, causing grave concern for campus safety. Danish Rao, a dedicated computer science educator who had served at the ABK High School for over 11 years, was tragically shot near the university’s central library.

Eyewitness accounts and early police investigations reveal that Rao was walking with two colleagues around 8:50 PM when two assailants on a scooter approached them. The attackers brandished pistols and opened fire on Rao, striking him at least three times, with two bullets targeting his head. Alarmingly, one gunman reportedly warned Rao beforehand, saying, “You don’t know me yet, now you will,” suggesting a calculated assault.

The assailants fled the scene immediately, further unsettling the university community.

Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon confirmed the shooting details, stating both suspects shot at Rao. He was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College for emergency care but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

This attack happened in a populous area near the library, raising significant security concerns on the university grounds. In response, police have established six specialized teams to probe the incident, diligently analyzing CCTV footage from various angles to identify the shooters and trace their escape route.

AMU Proctor Mohd Wasim Ali expressed profound grief during a press conference, confirming the attack’s details and asserting the urgent necessity for enhanced security measures on campus for the safety of students and faculty.

This violent act coincided with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s statement to the Assembly, highlighting improvements in law and order throughout the state. The murder at AMU, however, casts doubt on the safety of educational institutions in the area, prompting immediate concern.

University officials and local law enforcement are under pressure to conduct a thorough inquiry and implement measures to avert future incidents. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to step forward.

As the investigation unfolds, the AMU community mourns the loss of a committed educator and calls for justice. Further updates regarding the situation and efforts to capture the perpetrators are awaited.
