NEW YORK – Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is poised for significant growth. CEO Lisa Su highlighted during the company's analyst day that AMD's data center chip market could soar to $1 trillion by 2030, primarily due to the burgeoning demand for artificial intelligence.
The firm's offerings include central processing units (CPUs), networking components, and specialized AI processors. Su noted that the AI boom presents an extraordinary chance for AMD to strengthen its presence in data centers, which are pivotal to contemporary computing.
While AMD has made strides in CPUs, competing against long-term rival Intel, it encounters fierce competition in AI infrastructure from Nvidia, the current leader in high-performance data center chips. Nevertheless, AMD is advancing. The company plans to unveil its upcoming MI400 AI chips in 2026, catering to both scientific research and generative AI applications. In tandem, AMD is readying a full server rack to align with Nvidia's existing GB200 NVL72 product.
AMD has also been pursuing acquisitions of AI-oriented firms, including server builder ZT Systems and software startups like MK1. These initiatives seek to bolster both technology and expertise, enhancing AMD's AI capabilities. “We are constructing the tools and software that drive AI effectiveness,” stated Chief Strategy Officer Mat Hein.
Recent partnerships have further augmented AMD's standing in the market. In October, the company sealed a multiyear agreement with OpenAI, anticipated to bring in over $100 billion in revenue over four years. OpenAI will also have the option to secure up to a 10% ownership stake in AMD, reinforcing their ties.
The impact of AI is already evident in AMD's financial projections. The company has forecasted fourth-quarter revenue surpassing Wall Street's expectations, largely propelled by robust demand for AI chips. Although AMD shares experienced a minor decline, executives remain hopeful about the upward trend in the data center sector.
With AI revolutionizing sectors and stimulating extensive cloud computing demand, AMD is making bold moves, confident that its combination of CPUs, AI processors, server infrastructure, and strategic acquisitions will enable it to emerge as a dominant player in the future trillion-dollar data center arena.
