On Thursday morning, a moderate 6.0-magnitude earthquake affected the Anchorage metropolitan area in Alaska, producing light tremors in several communities, with no significant damage reported according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The seismic event occurred at 8:11 a.m. local time at a depth of 69 kilometers (43 miles). The USGS determined the epicenter was located 12 kilometers (7 miles) west-northwest of Susitna, roughly 108 kilometers (67 miles) northwest of Anchorage.
Local officials promptly initiated inspections throughout the area. Mayor Suzanne LaFrance of Anchorage reported on social media that municipal inspectors found no problems with crucial public infrastructure, ensuring that essential services remained intact.
Emergency management officials also assured that there was no tsunami threat, as per the announcement from the U.S. Tsunami Warning System.
In the wake of the earthquake, while some felt anxiety, many Alaskans took to social media to share humor, dubbing the event "Shakesgiving" in light-hearted recognition of the holiday, which quickly gained traction online.
According to USGS, Alaska is the most earthquake-prone state in the U.S., ranking among the most seismically active areas worldwide. Typically, the state experiences an average magnitude-7 earthquake annually.
The earthquake recorded Thursday is the strongest event in south-central Alaska since 2021, as reported by local broadcaster KTUU TV.
