Ajou Ajou Released by Roughriders Following Misconduct Investigation

Post by : Shweta

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have announced the release of wide receiver Ajou Ajou, following an investigation carried out by the Canadian Football League (CFL) into allegations of misconduct. The investigation found that Ajou had engaged in “aggressive and unwelcome physical contact” with several women at a Regina restaurant on November 18, 2025, coinciding with the team's Grey Cup celebration.

The CFL initiated the investigation after reports of multiple allegations surfaced in late January. A thorough inquiry followed, incorporating interviews with Ajou, witnesses, and the complainants involved. Based on the findings, the league concluded Ajou breached its policies on gender-based violence and harassment.

In response to the misconduct, the CFL has suspended Ajou for the upcoming 2026 preseason and for at least six regular-season games. The league has also set forth specific conditions for any future reinstatement, requiring a minimum of 15 mandatory counseling sessions with a gender-based violence specialist, a psychological evaluation, and a formal discussion with Commissioner Stewart Johnston. The CFL cautioned that failure to meet these stipulations may result in further disciplinary measures.

The Roughriders organization reacted decisively, asserting that Ajou’s actions contradicted the team’s foundational values. General Manager Jeremy O’Day emphasized the importance of respect, integrity, and personal accountability within the team. He confirmed that the organization acted promptly by notifying league officials once the allegations were brought to light.

O’Day remarked on the context surrounding the incident, noting it occurred during the team’s Grey Cup festivities. However, he stressed that such circumstances do not justify inappropriate actions. He characterized the situation as disheartening, reiterating the organization's commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment.

Despite the potential for Ajou’s reinstatement, O’Day firmly stated that the player will not return to the Roughriders under any circumstances. He described his discussion with Ajou as challenging and regrettable, yet essential due to the gravity of the situation.

The CFL has also reaffirmed its dedication to supporting those impacted by such incidents, offering access to professional counseling, support services, and safety planning. Meanwhile, local authorities in Regina confirmed that they have not received any formal complaints associated with this case.

This incident underscores the league’s stringent approach to player behavior and reinforces its ongoing mission to ensure accountability and respect both on and off the field.
