Sunwing Vacations and WestJet Vacations have declared a halt on all operations to Cuba, effective until October 2026, driven by a severe fuel crisis impacting travel and tourism on the island.
The companies disclosed that all flights and holiday packages to Cuba will be canceled from June 20 through October 9, primarily impacting renowned tourist spots like Varadero and Cayo Coco, which are top choices for travelers from Canada.
This decision arises as Cuba grapples with critical shortages of gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel, leading to widespread power outages and essential service disruptions throughout the country. Earlier in the year, major carriers, including Air Canada, had similarly reduced or halted routes due to unreliable fuel availability at Cuban airports.
Travel operators have mentioned that the current scenario complicates the ability to uphold safe and reliable flight operations. Airlines struggling to secure aviation fuel are forced to disrupt flight schedules, prompting cancellations and adjustments in travel itineraries.
Despite this suspension, Sunwing Vacations Group will keep offering travel packages to various destinations across Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. Beach locales that remain unaffected by the crisis are popular alternatives.
The company mentioned that it anticipates gradually resuming services to Cuba later in October, with flights to Varadero and Cayo Coco set to recommence on October 10, followed by additional destinations as the month progresses.
Customers with reservations for Cuba during the suspension will be reached out to, providing them with alternative options or adjustments to their bookings.
This situation signifies the escalating repercussions of Cuba’s energy crisis on its tourism sector, a vital revenue source for the nation. The ongoing fuel shortages are hampering flight operations and decreasing the influx of international tourists, leaving many beach destinations experiencing limited activity.
In conclusion, the suspension showcases the significant challenges airlines and travelers face as persistent fuel shortages cast a shadow over operations in the region.
