Airbus Suspends Operations for 6,000 Jets Due to Solar Radiation Software Issues

Post by : Raina Nasser

A global disruption in air travel has emerged as Airbus initiates immediate inspections and repairs on nearly 6,000 jets from the A320 family. This action follows the revelation of a significant software malfunction in flight control systems caused by bursts of solar radiation. The issue came to light after a concerning incident in October, when a JetBlue flight from the U.S. to Mexico experienced a sudden drop in altitude, necessitating an emergency landing that injured at least 15 passengers.

The affected aircraft include the A318, A319, A320, and A321 models worldwide. Airbus indicated that most of these planes can be repaired with a software update taking around three hours. Airlines such as Wizz Air and EasyJet have already updated many of their aircraft and resumed operations. Nevertheless, approximately 900 older models will need complete computer replacements, which will ground them until repairs are made.

Emergency airworthiness directives were issued by regulators in Europe, the UK, and the U.S., limiting affected aircraft to operating as "ferry flights" without passengers until all repairs are finished. Despite the extensive recall, major UK airports reported few disruptions, and airlines like British Airways and Air India confirmed only minor impacts on their fleets.

Airbus reiterated that this measure is a precautionary step to uphold safety standards. Experts have pointed out that while such occurrences are infrequent, they demonstrate how external elements, such as solar radiation, can impact modern "fly-by-wire" aircraft that rely heavily on computer systems for flight control. Aviation authorities underscored that air travel remains exceptionally safe, highlighting the prompt global response and strong safety protocols that safeguard passengers.
