Air Canada expects 2026 to be a testing year as upward pressure on labour expenses and a cooling U.S. leisure market threaten near-term results. The carrier, however, intends to take delivery of 35 new aircraft to support its medium- and long-term growth plans.
In a Wednesday briefing for analysts, executives said the airline faces financial headwinds but remains focused on modernisation and operational resilience. The incoming jets are expected to reduce unit costs, improve fuel efficiency and refresh the passenger experience across domestic and international services.
The airline is still stabilising after recent disruption. In the third quarter, a cabin crew strike forced the cancellation of thousands of flights and reduced revenue during a key travel period, leaving a noticeable mark on profitability.
Compounding the challenge is softer leisure travel between Canada and the United States, a core route network for Air Canada. Greater traveller caution and competitive pricing by U.S. carriers have weighed on transborder performance compared with earlier quarters.
Management highlighted that tighter cost controls, optimized scheduling and the phased integration of new aircraft should help offset some of the pressures in 2026. The carrier is also pursuing opportunities in other international markets to diversify revenue streams.
Shares fell nearly 3% in early trading following the earnings update, reflecting investor concern over near-term margins. Still, analysts note that fleet renewal and a focus on efficiency could underpin a stronger recovery by 2027.
