AIIMS Expert Highlights 8 Critical Indicators of Fatty Liver Disease

Post by : Saif Nasser

Fatty liver disease is increasingly recognized as a significant health concern globally, with diagnoses skyrocketing each year. Known medically as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, this condition arises when excess fat accumulates in the liver. If not addressed promptly, it risks serious long-term health consequences.

Data published in a recent ScienceDirect study indicates the alarming growth of this issue. From about 24 million recorded cases in 1990, the figure surged to over 48 million by 2021. Projections suggest this could escalate to nearly 79 million by 2050, underscoring the critical need for awareness of early warning signs.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an AIIMS-trained liver specialist with qualifications from Harvard and Stanford, outlined eight key indicators that may suggest liver dysfunction. He shared this information on Instagram on November 16, urging individuals to be vigilant about bodily changes. He noted that recognizing these signs and seeking early medical advice is crucial for better outcomes.

Fatty liver disease typically progresses silently, with many individuals remaining asymptomatic until the situation deteriorates. Thus, minor bodily changes should not be overlooked. Dr. Sethi points out that symptoms may include abdominal pain or discomfort. Fatigue, even after adequate rest, is another red flag, as is swelling in the legs or abdomen, potentially signaling fluid retention.

Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, is frequently observed as the body struggles to process fats and sugars efficiently. Additional signs may include a sensation of heaviness in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, loss of appetite, or an unusual feeling of fullness after small meals. Such early signs can be subtle yet critical, indicating liver stress.

Dr. Sethi also warns that severe cases may present with jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the skin or eyes, necessitating immediate medical evaluation. Cognitive difficulties, such as trouble concentrating or confusion, can occur if the liver fails to effectively eliminate toxins from the bloodstream, and these symptoms require urgent intervention.

Research indicates that a modern lifestyle contributes significantly to the prevalence of fatty liver disease. Sedentary habits, poor dietary choices, disrupted sleep patterns, and elevated stress levels heighten the risk. Consuming high amounts of sugar, fried foods, and processed snacks leads to gradual fat accumulation in the liver. Risk factors like obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol further exacerbate the situation.

Timely detection is key to averting major health complications. Simple lifestyle alterations, such as increasing fruit and vegetable intake, maintaining regular physical activity, staying hydrated, and achieving a healthy weight, can significantly enhance liver health. It is also crucial to limit alcohol and sugary beverage consumption. Regular health check-ups and basic blood work can aid in early identification of issues.

Dr. Sethi's message is unequivocal: be attentive to your body, act promptly, and safeguard your liver health. Given the rising incidence worldwide, recognizing these signs is essential for everyone. With early intervention and diligent care, fatty liver disease can be effectively managed, allowing for sustained liver health over the years.
