Tragic Shooting Near White House Adds Tension to Asylum Debate

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a shocking incident outside the White House, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, reportedly opened fire on two National Guard members, resulting in the death of one. While Lakanwal sustained injuries during the confrontation, he has pleaded not guilty to murder and firearms charges from his hospital bed.

The deceased, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom from West Virginia, was tragically shot, while her colleague Andrew Wolfe remains in critical condition. For his actions, Lakanwal faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and various firearms offenses. A federal judge has ruled that he should remain in custody until the next court hearing, scheduled for January 14.

Authorities have disclosed that Lakanwal entered the U.S. under a resettlement initiative following the American military's withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. There are concerns that he may have experienced radicalization after arriving in the country, as it is alleged he traveled across the U.S. prior to executing the attack on Thanksgiving Eve. Eyewitnesses reported hearing him shout, “Allahu Akbar!” during the incident.

The shooting has reignited discussions on U.S. asylum policy, prompting the Trump administration to suspend visas for Afghan nationals retrospectively and halt decisions on all asylum cases amid worries about vetting practices. It’s worth noting that Lakanwal had previously been part of a CIA-supported program fighting against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Additionally, the Department of Justice has pointed to another alarming incident in Texas, where 30-year-old Afghan national Mohammad Dawood Alokozay was apprehended for allegedly issuing threats of a suicide attack in a widely circulated social media video.

This tragic shooting highlights a rare yet severe incident involving a resettled Afghan individual and raises vital questions about security measures, radicalization, and immigration program oversight within the U.S.
