South Korea’s biotech company ADEL has signed a major $1.04 billion deal with French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi to develop and sell a new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. The agreement marks a significant step forward in the global fight against this debilitating brain disorder.
Under the deal, ADEL will receive an $80 million upfront payment. Additional payments will be made as the drug progresses through development stages and reaches commercial success. ADEL will also earn royalties from future sales.
The experimental drug, named ADEL-Y01, is an antibody therapy designed to block harmful forms of a protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease. This protein, called tau, plays a key role in the memory loss and cognitive decline seen in patients. The therapy is currently undergoing early-stage human trials in the United States.
Sanofi praised ADEL’s innovative approach, which targets tau acetylation. “ADEL's approach offers a promising and differentiated mechanism for addressing the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Erik Wallstroem, global head of Multiple Sclerosis, Neurology and Gene Therapy Development at Sanofi.
This collaboration follows a broader trend of partnerships between large pharmaceutical companies and smaller biotech firms to tackle complex diseases. On the same day, Sanofi also signed a separate deal with Dren Bio, a private biotech company, for up to $1.7 billion to develop therapies for autoimmune diseases.
The deal with ADEL reflects the growing urgency to find effective treatments for Alzheimer’s, which affects millions of people worldwide. Current therapies primarily manage symptoms, but drugs that target the underlying disease process could significantly change patients’ lives.
By combining ADEL’s innovative research with Sanofi’s global development and commercialization expertise, both companies aim to accelerate the development of ADEL-Y01 and bring it to patients as quickly as possible. Experts believe that such partnerships are crucial for advancing medical science and offering hope to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
