Abu Dhabi University Leads the Way in Inclusion and Accessibility

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has successfully concluded its Inclusion Advocates of Tomorrow programme, designed to equip students with essential expertise aimed at enhancing accessibility and promoting social inclusion. This initiative, facilitated by ADU Innovate, collaborated with the Zayed Authority for People of Determination, Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, and Key2Enable to introduce innovative practices into inclusive education.

Over the span of a year, more than 100 ADU students embarked on a comprehensive journey that combined theoretical learning with practical applications. They delved into the principles of inclusive design, explored accessibility frameworks, and familiarized themselves with assistive technologies, including hands-on field visits to the Zayed Authority where they observed these tools utilized in educational environments.

The initiative also offered practical exposure to assistive tools such as adaptive keyboards and tailored learning software from Key2Enable, enabling students to grasp and tackle the obstacles faced by People of Determination. Concurrently, Ma’an's Community Volunteering Activation Program (CVAP) involved students in projects that promote inclusion within the community, thereby illustrating how collaborative efforts can result in meaningful change.

This initiative by ADU not only nurtures inclusive innovation but also reinforces the university’s dedication to fostering learning environments where every individual is valued. Participants trained through this programme are now well-prepared to create solutions that eliminate barriers, enhancing access to education and communal spaces.

Through these initiatives, Abu Dhabi University underlines its position as a center of inclusion and creativity, inspiring upcoming leaders to advocate for accessibility, compassion, and societal advancement across diverse contexts.
