Indonesia Steps Up Immigration Crackdown on Foreign Workers

Post by : Shakul

In a significant move, Indonesian officials in the Riau Islands have ramped up their initiatives against illegal employment, detaining multiple foreign nationals who were reportedly working without the necessary permits in Batam's industrial and construction hubs.

From March to April 10, the Batam Immigration Office apprehended six individuals, which included five from China and one from Malaysia, during heightened scrutiny operations.

This enforcement effort specifically targeted foreigners suspected of misusing their visa status by engaging in unauthorized employment activities.

Initial investigations uncovered that two Chinese workers were engaged in activities at an industrial estate while holding limited stay permits that did not permit labor.

Additionally, further inspections in early April led to the detention of three more Chinese nationals found at a construction site, where they were performing technical roles while holding B211 visit visas, which are intended for business purposes and not for employment.

In a related incident, immigration officials in Ranai deported two Malaysian workers discovered working in ship repair without valid work permits.

Officials declared that these enforcement actions aim to bolster adherence to immigration laws and prevent the exploitation of visa regulations in vital economic zones.

There is a strong commitment from authorities to maintain vigilant oversight of foreign workers, safeguarding local labor laws and ensuring compliance with employment regulations.
