Abu Dhabi’s public parks are changing the way students learn. They are no longer just places to relax or play. Today, these parks are turning into lively outdoor classrooms, giving students the chance to connect with nature while learning important lessons about the environment, history, and sustainability.
Instead of only serving as recreational areas, Abu Dhabi’s parks now host specially designed educational programs for students of different school levels. These programs allow children to explore the natural world, learn about plants and animals, and understand their responsibility toward the environment. Hands-on activities encourage students to think critically and apply what they learn in real life. This approach connects classroom knowledge with the world outside, making education more practical and fun.
Umm Al Emarat Park: A Leading Example
One park leading this educational transformation is Umm Al Emarat Park. The park has created tailored learning experiences for different student age groups. For primary school students, the focus is on exploring animals and desert plants. Preparatory students engage in workshops about Bedouin traditions, desert life, and sustainability practices. Secondary students go deeper, studying ecosystems, understanding desert adaptation, and learning about the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE.
Since starting its educational programs in 2016, Umm Al Emarat Park has welcomed over 80,000 students. In the 2024–2025 school year alone, 3,372 students participated in these programs. The park’s spokesperson explained that the goal is to combine learning with fun. “We want students to explore and discover nature while gaining knowledge,” she said. She added that the park also focuses on building students’ connections to Emirati heritage, raising awareness about sustainability, and expanding partnerships with schools to offer innovative learning experiences.
City-Wide Efforts to Promote Outdoor Learning
Abu Dhabi City Municipality is also working to transform several other public parks into educational spaces. They are developing modern facilities and environmental programs in these parks. Through workshops and school collaborations, the municipality is helping students learn about biodiversity, water conservation, recycling, and other sustainable practices. The idea is to make environmental education an exciting, practical experience outside the classroom.
Looking Ahead: Integrating Parks into School Curricula
The future plans for Abu Dhabi’s parks include closer collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education and Knowledge. These partnerships aim to fully integrate outdoor learning into the school curriculum. Parks are expected to become open-air laboratories where students can study nature, practice sustainability, and develop social responsibility. By turning green spaces into active learning environments, Abu Dhabi hopes to foster a lifelong love for nature among students.
This transformation reflects the city’s commitment to creating educational opportunities that go beyond books. By engaging students directly with nature and local heritage, Abu Dhabi is providing a model for interactive, hands-on learning that other cities might follow. Parks are no longer just places to relax—they are spaces where students can grow, explore, and connect with the world around them.
Why This Matters
The shift toward educational parks is important for several reasons. First, it encourages young people to value and protect the environment. Second, it strengthens cultural identity by teaching students about local traditions and heritage. Third, it provides a practical learning experience, helping students understand how the knowledge they gain in school applies in the real world.
By offering this blend of fun, education, and social awareness, Abu Dhabi’s parks are creating a new way for students to learn. The city’s vision is to make outdoor learning a natural part of education, giving students experiences they will remember for a lifetime.
