Maintaining gut health is crucial for both physical and mental well-being, and specialists emphasize that it hinges on our daily choices. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a distinguished gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, has dedicated 25 years to addressing stomach and liver conditions. In a recent update on November 15, he revealed eight straightforward habits that anyone can incorporate for better digestion and health.
Dr. Sethi notes that achieving gut health is not solely about dietary intake. It also encompasses how we kick-start our mornings, engage in physical activity, and manage stress. He asserts that cultivating healthy habits in 2025 can lay the groundwork for a more vibrant 2026.
His initial recommendation is to refrain from checking your phone immediately upon waking up. He points out that cortisol levels peak in the morning, and accessing your phone can exacerbate stress. Instead, he suggests beginning your day by reflecting on something you’re thankful for. This simple practice calms the mind and aids digestion. He also cautions against using phones in the restroom, as it fosters unhealthy habits and introduces additional stress into your life.
The second habit involves soaking up at least ten minutes of morning sunlight. This helps realign the body’s internal clock, boosts mood, enhances vitamin D levels, and ensures the digestive system functions optimally.
Another beneficial habit is to take a ten-minute walk following meals. Dr. Sethi elaborates that this habit enhances digestion, alleviates gas and bloating, and helps maintain stable blood sugar levels. Even a brief stroll can significantly impact how one feels right after eating.
He recommends incorporating fermented foods into the diet at least three times weekly. Foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and kanji increase beneficial bacteria in the gut, promoting natural digestion and reducing reliance on probiotic supplements.
Dr. Sethi believes that when minor habits are consistently practiced, they lead to substantial and enduring changes. He urges individuals to concentrate on simple actions instead of complex diets or severe routines. A healthy gut translates into increased energy, improved immunity, and a more tranquil mind.
His advice is clear: optimal health stems from the smaller actions we undertake daily. By embracing mindful mornings, sunlight, activity, and nutritious foods, anyone can cultivate a healthier gut and an enriched life.
