Heart failure is often dubbed a silent killer due to its gradual onset and lack of obvious symptoms. Many individuals may feel perfectly well until they face a significant heart issue. This underscores the importance of daily heart care, even in moments of good health.
Renowned cardiologist and heart transplant surgeon Dr. Dmitry Yaranov recently highlighted five habits he intentionally avoids to safeguard his heart. In a video released on November 14, he emphasized that minor lifestyle adjustments today can significantly enhance heart longevity.
1. Don’t disregard blood pressure
Dr. Yaranov points out that elevated blood pressure can be perilous, often manifesting without noticeable signs. Although one might feel fine, there may still be potential risks. He regularly monitors his blood pressure and encourages others to do the same.
2. Avoid skipping physical activity
He explains that the heart, like any other muscle, weakens without exercise. Just 30 minutes of activity a day can yield substantial benefits. Activities like walking, cycling, or simple home workouts are all effective.
3. Steer clear of ultra-processed foods
Dr. Yaranov warns that packaged and heavily processed foods can trigger inflammation and elevate cholesterol. These dietary choices quietly jeopardize heart health. He opts for wholesome, natural foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fresh meals.
4. Don’t overlook the importance of sleep
Quality sleep is vital for heart health, according to Dr. Yaranov. Insufficient sleep or issues like sleep apnea can raise blood pressure and heighten heart failure risks. He prioritizes going to bed on time and getting adequate rest nightly.
5. Don’t neglect preventive medications
If a healthcare provider prescribes medications such as statins or blood pressure drugs, Dr. Yaranov advocates for their use. These medications are crucial for preventing significant heart issues and can potentially save lives.
Dr. Yaranov emphasizes that heart issues develop subtly over time, often as a result of unhealthy habits. By making small changes daily — like increasing physical activity, improving diet, ensuring adequate sleep, and adhering to prescribed medications — everyone can bolster their heart's health and resilience.
