Managing diabetes is not only about taking medicines. For older adults, daily habits play a major role in keeping blood sugar levels steady and preventing sudden spikes. Doctors often say that seniors face higher risks of complications, so small lifestyle changes become very important. To understand what can help, Dr Syed Mukhtar Mohiuddin, a consultant and GP at Anvayaa, explained how simple everyday practices can support better control and better health.
He said that the food choices seniors make have a strong effect on blood sugar stability. He encouraged older adults to include foods that digest slowly and prevent sudden rises in glucose. He also explained that tracking carbohydrate intake can prevent sharp fluctuations. Protein should be added to every meal because it supports muscle strength and helps prevent sarcopenia, which is the loss of muscle mass that often happens as people age. He said that foods rich in fibre, such as oats, leafy vegetables, whole grains, and other vegetables, should be part of the daily diet because they help slow down glucose absorption and also support digestion.
According to the doctor, seniors should focus on lean proteins such as eggs, fish, and lentils, and choose complex carbohydrates like millets and brown rice. He advised avoiding sugary drinks, white rice, white bread, fried foods, and processed snacks. He added that instead of eating heavy meals, seniors should eat smaller meals more often, because it helps keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the day.
Dr Mohiuddin said that physical activity is also essential for better control. Even simple activities like 10 minutes of walking or stretching before and after meals can reduce post-meal sugar spikes. He recommended gentle exercises such as yoga, tai chi, or light strength training, which are easy on the body but still effective. He also reminded seniors to avoid long periods of sitting because staying active helps the body use insulin more effectively.
The doctor stressed the importance of regular monitoring of key health parameters, which helps detect early changes and prevents complications. He also said that staying hydrated is very important. Seniors should drink enough water throughout the day and limit drinks that contain sugar or too much caffeine. Proper hydration supports metabolism and keeps blood sugar from rising too quickly.
Sleep and stress also play a major role. Dr Mohiuddin encouraged seniors to get 7-8 hours of good sleep and practise calming activities such as meditation, deep breathing, or mindfulness. Stress can raise blood sugar, so controlling it helps prevent sudden spikes.
The doctor explained that diabetes management becomes much stronger when medication is combined with daily healthy habits. For older adults, these practices not only help maintain steady blood sugar but also improve overall well-being. By following simple routines, seniors can reduce risks, stay healthier, and manage diabetes more confidently in their daily lives.
