3.3-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks North-West England, Residents Alerted

Post by : Raina Nasser

A noticeable earthquake registered 3.3-magnitude in north-west England on Wednesday night, surprising locals as their homes shook and loud booms resonated through the area. The British Geological Survey (BGS) reported that the quake occurred just after 11:23 pm, impacting various locations across Lancashire and the southern parts of the Lake District.

The epicentre was situated just off Silverdale’s coast in Lancashire, at a shallow depth of around 1.86 miles. Although it lacked the strength to inflict any damage, many residents took to the streets, startled by the sudden onset of shaking.

Descriptions among locals varied, with some likening the tremor to an “explosion underground,” noting it was enough to rattle furniture. Panic ensued in quiet neighbourhoods as homes briefly shook.

In Carnforth, the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service reported several residents hearing a loud sound during the tremor. Lancaster Police corroborated these reports, indicating the disturbances were related to a “minor earthquake near the Lancashire–Cumbria border.”

Authorities reassured the community that there were no injuries or structural harm. Emergency services, including local police, fire teams, and North West Ambulance Service, were dispatched to ensure safety.

The Volcano Discovery website accumulated over 1,000 reports from citizens, some as far as Blackpool. One Carnforth resident remarked that the shaking felt intense enough to imply the roof was caving in, while another from Silverdale mentioned they felt compelled to step outside to check for any damage.

Seismic activity in the UK is not out of the ordinary, with the BGS documenting about 300 tremors annually, although only around 30 are notably felt. The 3.3-magnitude quake from Wednesday stands out as one of the more perceptible tremors this year, serving as a reminder of the considerable impact even minor quakes can have when they occur near the surface.
