A 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck Andhra Pradesh’s Alluri Sitarama Raju district in the early hours of Tuesday, with the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) recording the event at 4:19 am. The tremor originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres and was felt briefly in nearby Visakhapatnam.
State officials said there were no reports of fatalities or structural damage following the event. Local agencies nonetheless issued precautionary advisories for residents in affected localities as a matter of caution.
The epicentre was located at latitude 18.02°N and longitude 82.58°E. An APSDMA spokesperson noted the quake was centred in Alluri Sitarama Raju district and that residents in parts of Vizag experienced short-lived shaking.
People in the affected zones described light vibrations lasting a few seconds, after which normal activity resumed. Disaster-response teams across both districts were placed on alert to mobilise if required.
Seismologists characterised the event as minor and consistent with the area's moderate seismicity. Authorities indicated there was no immediate expectation of damaging aftershocks.
Officials urged calm and reminded the public to follow basic earthquake safety guidance should any further tremors occur.
