A 19-year-old man was taken into custody after authorities say he damaged two valuable paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The episode unfolded on Monday at about 4:40 p.m. inside the museum’s Fifth Avenue building, a leading cultural institution that draws millions of visitors.
Officials reported that the individual acted erratically and seemed to be under the influence of an unknown substance when he doused two notable canvases with water — Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres’s Princesse de Broglie and Girolamo dai Libri’s Madonna and Child with Saints. Staff say he also pulled several tapestries from their mounts before security intervened.
Visitors alerted museum security, who removed the man from the galleries and contacted police. He was arrested and faces criminal mischief charges. Authorities placed preliminary damages at roughly $4,000 in total, with each painting suffering about $1,000 in harm.
A museum spokesperson stated that no visitors or major objects were seriously harmed and commended the rapid response by security personnel and local law enforcement for safeguarding both the public and the collection.
The Metropolitan Museum, which houses more than two million objects spanning some 5,000 years, remains a cornerstone of cultural heritage in the United States. This incident has renewed scrutiny of protection measures for priceless artworks as museums worldwide confront a rise in vandalism and similar threats.
