UK’s £4m Gaza Mine Clearance Drive to Boost Aid Access

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The United Kingdom is intensifying its humanitarian efforts in Gaza as Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper prepares to visit the Middle East this week. Her visit comes at a critical time when the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is holding, and the focus has shifted to ensuring the safe delivery of much-needed aid.

As part of its commitment, the UK government has announced a £4 million contribution to the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS). The funding will support the removal of an estimated 7,500 tonnes of unexploded munitions that currently block roads and vital access routes across the enclave. Clearing these hazards is expected to speed up the delivery of food, medical supplies, and relief materials to Gaza’s struggling population.

“The situation in Gaza is desperate without the vital humanitarian support they need. We must do everything we can to flood Gaza with aid,” said Cooper ahead of her visit. She emphasized that clearing explosives is essential to creating safe routes for aid convoys and restoring normalcy for civilians caught in the crisis.

Cooper recently visited the Halo Project in Wilton, Wiltshire, where she met British deminers working on operations in Gaza. Her discussions focused on the UK’s expanded role in supporting UN and humanitarian organizations to deliver assistance safely and effectively.

The Foreign Office described aid access as a “vital component” of the ongoing truce, brokered with the support of the United States, which aims to pave the way toward lasting peace and reconstruction in the region.

With this move, the UK strengthens its position as a key humanitarian partner in the Middle East, emphasizing both immediate relief and long-term recovery for Gaza’s people.
