VinFast E-Bike Sales Surge After Hanoi Motorbike Ban Announcement

Post by : Saif Nasser

Vietnam’s electric vehicle maker VinFast Auto Ltd has seen a huge rise in sales of electric bikes and scooters following Hanoi’s announcement to ban petrol-powered motorbikes from the city center in 2026.

VinFast said on Wednesday that it delivered more than 120,000 electric two-wheelers in the third quarter of 2025, marking a 73% increase compared with the previous quarter. The total deliveries in the third quarter alone were more than the company sold in the first half of the year. In the first nine months of 2025, VinFast sold 234,536 e-scooters and e-bikes, an increase of 489% compared to the same period last year.

The growth comes after Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh issued a directive in July to stop petrol motorbikes from entering central Hanoi starting mid-2026. This move is part of efforts to reduce air pollution. Wider bans are expected in 2028, with the possibility of similar restrictions across the country.

The ban has caused concerns from foreign governments and manufacturers. Reuters reported that the Japanese government and leading Japanese motorbike companies, including Honda, warned that the ban could lead to job losses and disrupt Vietnam’s $4.6 billion motorbike market. Nearly 80% of Vietnam’s 100 million people own a motorbike, making it one of the highest motorbike ownership rates in the world. The Japanese embassy and Vietnam’s motorbike association have recommended a phased electrification plan to give the industry time to adjust.

VinFast also reported its car sales in the third quarter. The company delivered 38,195 cars, bringing nine-month deliveries to 110,362 vehicles. VinFast aims to sell 200,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in 2025.

Analysts say the Hanoi ban is likely to boost demand for electric two-wheelers across the country, giving local manufacturers like VinFast a strong opportunity to expand. The move also aligns with Vietnam’s broader plan to cut air pollution and reduce dependence on petrol vehicles.
