Shifts in Subject Choices for Vietnam's 2026 Graduation Exams

Post by : Shakul

The 2026 high school graduation examinations in Vietnam are undergoing a noteworthy evolution in subject preferences among students, with an increasing number opting for STEM and technology disciplines over traditional courses. Education authorities attribute this shift to a stronger emphasis on career-oriented education and the impact of the 2018 General Education Program.

Recent figures from Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training reveal a significant uptick in student registrations for subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This trend suggests that students are now choosing subjects based on their own strengths and future employment prospects, rather than adhering to conventional academic tracks.

A remarkable aspect of this shift is the increase in registrations for tech-centric subjects. Notably, Informatics experienced a 142 percent rise in registrations, while Industrial Technology jumped by 205 percent. Agricultural Technology also saw significant growth, indicating a rising interest in sectors linked to innovation and modern industry practices.

Officials credit this trend to the effectiveness of career counseling initiatives undertaken in schools, as students are more frequently selecting subjects that resonate with their ambitions. This change is leading to a more varied examination landscape and encouraging learners to specialize in fields that reflect their prospective career paths.

Despite the growth in STEM subject registrations, social sciences continue to have a solid presence in the education framework, with History noted as the most sought-after elective for 2026, attracting over 570,000 candidates. Economic and Legal Education also remain in demand, highlighting young learners' increasing interest in civic issues, economics, and legal education.

Additionally, a significant feat of the 2026 examination cycle includes the success of digital registration initiatives. Over 1.2 million students registered online, accounting for nearly 98.5 percent of all candidates, showcasing substantial advancements in educational management and exam administration nationwide.

Experts in education view these developments as indicative of a progressive shift in Vietnam's educational landscape. The emerging balance between STEM disciplines, social sciences, guided career paths, and digital learning is anticipated to play a crucial role in developing a skilled workforce that can navigate future economic and technological demands while aiding national development objectives.
