Authorities Call on Citizens to Eliminate Invasive Tegu Lizards

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Wildlife officials across various regions in the United States have issued a strong plea for residents to eliminate and report sightings of Argentine black and white tegu lizards, a non-native species that is encroaching into numerous southern states and endangering local ecosystems.

In southeastern Georgia, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has notably requested that individuals take necessary measures upon encountering these reptiles. This species, not indigenous to the U.S., poses significant threats to both wildlife and the environment.

According to Daniel Sollenberger, a senior biologist with the DNR's Wildlife Resources Division, those who cannot safely euthanize these lizards should document the encounters with photographs and notify wildlife authorities. Officials can then offer assistance or guidance regarding trapping and removal procedures.

Known scientifically as Salvator merianae, Argentine black and white tegus are originally from South America. They entered the U.S. via the exotic pet trade and have since formed wild populations across states like Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

Reaching lengths of up to four feet, these lizards are adaptable to various environments. Experts warn that tegus endanger native wildlife by feeding on eggs, smaller animals, reptiles, and ground-nesting birds. Additionally, they may inflict damage to crops and private property.

Beyond ecological issues, authorities also highlight the potential health risks posed by these reptiles, as they may harbor exotic parasites and harmful bacteria, including Salmonella, which can affect both humans and animals.

State wildlife agencies have initiated control and removal strategies to curtail the spread of this invasive species, with trapping efforts already taking place in areas where tegu populations have been identified.

Experts emphasize that prompt action is essential to prevent these invasive lizards from extending into additional territories. If not effectively managed, their populations could surge and inflict lasting ecological harm.

Authorities persist in urging residents to report sightings and support the ongoing initiatives aimed at preserving native wildlife and ensuring ecological stability in impacted regions.
