A White House peace proposal to resolve the war in Gaza has drawn fresh attention because it assigns a central role to Donald Trump and Tony Blair in overseeing an interim administration for the territory.
Under the proposal, Gaza would be managed by a temporary technocratic Palestinian committee — not a political body — entrusted with day-to-day governance.
Above this committee would sit an international body called the “Board of Peace.” Trump would head this board alongside other global figures, including Blair.
The committee is expected to include a mix of qualified Palestinians and international experts (unidentified so far). Importantly, Hamas would have no role in this interim government.
The responsibilities would include rebuilding infrastructure, restoring services, and preparing Gaza for eventual handover — once the Palestinian Authority (PA) completes a promised reform agenda.
Blair’s proposed involvement has raised eyebrows across the Palestinian and international communities. His legacy in the Middle East is shadowed by the war in Iraq, which was justified in part by discredited claims about weapons of mass destruction.
Critics argue his presence evokes memories of colonial interference. As one Palestinian leader put it: referencing Blair “immediately brings to mind Iraq.”
Meanwhile, Blair himself publicly endorsed the plan, calling it “bold and intelligent,” and welcomed the leadership role proposed for him.
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions. Some Palestinian and Muslim-majority states welcomed Trump’s push to end hostilities.
However, many remain skeptical. Questions abound: How will the interim authority gain legitimacy without popular mandate? Can Gaza’s reconstruction proceed without stability and security? If Hamas rejects the plan, will Israel or the U.S. reimpose military force?
Because Blair and Trump are not neutral actors in the region, their leadership in Gaza’s governance could complicate perceptions of fairness and sovereignty.
