The United States military said on Thursday that one of its airstrikes in northwest Syria has killed a top member of the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. The person who was killed was named Rakhim Boev. He was an ISIS official living in Syria.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM), which manages US military operations in the Middle East, shared the news on social media. They said the airstrike was very precise and targeted only Rakhim Boev. CENTCOM also said that Boev was involved in planning attacks that could hurt American citizens, their partners, and innocent people.

A photo posted with the announcement shows a badly damaged SUV with a smashed roof and broken windshield. This shows how strong the attack was.

Earlier this week, two drone strikes happened in the same region. They hit a car and a motorcycle. These strikes took place in Idlib, a part of Syria controlled by former rebels who now work with the Syrian government. Reports said two people were killed in those attacks.

AFP, a global news agency, reported about these drone strikes on Tuesday. However, it’s not yet clear if the person killed in the US airstrike is the same person from those earlier attacks. CENTCOM has not yet confirmed if these events are connected.

In a meeting last month in Riyadh, US President Donald Trump spoke with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. He asked for help to stop ISIS from growing strong again in the region.

The US has often carried out such airstrikes in Syria to stop dangerous ISIS members from attacking other countries or spreading violence.
