Clayton Herman, a 54-year-old from Winnipeg, has been in a U.S. immigration detention facility for almost six months, voicing feelings of being an “indefinite prisoner” with no clear release timeframe. Currently held at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center, his situation raises significant concerns about the nature of immigration detention in the United States.

Having entered the U.S. legally two decades ago, Herman overstayed his visa, leading to his current predicament. Despite not having any criminal convictions, he remains in custody, awaiting progress on his immigration case.

Inside the detention center, Herman describes the conditions as challenging, highlighting limited access to adequate food, medical assistance, and hygiene. He expresses anxiety about the uncertainty surrounding his release, indicating that he is unsure when or even if he will be allowed to leave.

His family in Canada reports limited contact and remains anxious about his wellbeing. They portray him as someone who deeply cherishes freedom, noting the significant difficulties imposed by his extended detention.
