Abu Dhabi Introduces New Fishing Regulations for 2026

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In line with Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan's directives, Abu Dhabi's responsible agency has initiated the rollout of updated ministerial decisions that revise fishing regulations for the 2026 season.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, in collaboration with the agency, has formulated these decisions to strike a balance between marine sustainability and food security, offering support to local fishermen.

Ministerial Decision No. (74) revokes a previous guideline that restricted the fishing and sale of specific fish species during their breeding periods. This new approach implements a more adaptable regulatory framework informed by contemporary data.

Simultaneously, Ministerial Decision No. (75) introduces a temporary allowance enabling the catch and sale of Longtail Silver Biddy fish, commonly referred to as Badah, exclusively within Abu Dhabi waters for the duration of 2026.

Officials have emphasized that this concession is temporary and will be applicable only for the 2026 season, undergoing regular evaluations based on scientific assessments to ensure the sustainability of fish stocks.

These regulatory changes are founded on optimistic fish stock assessments within the emirate’s waters, bolstered by scientific research and empirical data. It is anticipated that this initiative will enhance fish supply in local markets while aiding fishermen and industry workers.

The agency, serving as the supervisory body, will maintain oversight to ensure adherence to all fishing and sales regulations. They have urged fishermen and stakeholders to embrace the revised rules and collaborate with authorities to safeguard Abu Dhabi’s marine resources moving forward.
