Meta is gearing up to trial paid subscription models across its primary social media platforms—Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. This initiative was confirmed to TechCrunch on January 26, 2026, as part of Meta's broader strategy to diminish its reliance on advertising and boost continuous revenue streams.
The premium plans will include unique features aimed at enhancing user productivity, creativity, and integration of artificial intelligence tools. Meta has assured that the fundamental versions of all apps will remain free of charge for users.
Each platform will have distinct paid offerings rather than a unified subscription service. For instance, Instagram may provide perks like unlimited audience lists, the capability to check non-followers, and viewing Stories discreetly without notifying the creators.
Additionally, Meta intends to incorporate its recently acquired Manus AI agent into the subscription framework. The company is considering premium access to AI tools, including Vibes, an AI-driven video creation tool.
Details regarding subscriptions for Facebook and WhatsApp remain sparse. However, it appears WhatsApp may feature an ad-free option in areas such as Status and Channels. Meta is also exploring upgraded controls and features for paying users.
The company plans to initiate subscription trials shortly and will refine features based on user responses. This strategy aligns with a growing trend in social networking, exemplified by Snapchat's current premium offerings.
