Italian Man Sentenced in Unexpected Rolex Fraud Case in Singapore

Post by : Shakul

In an intriguing fraud case that unfolded in Singapore, an Italian man was sentenced to prison after attempting to deceive a watch dealer with a luxury watch he mistakenly thought was counterfeit. The irony of the situation, given that the watch was authentic, has captured public interest.

Deepak Singh received a seven-month jail sentence after admitting to the crime of attempted fraud. The court emphasized that his fraudulent intentions were sufficient for a conviction, despite the fact that his plan unraveled due to unforeseen circumstances.

The scenario began in early 2025 when Singh bought a unique Rolex GMT Saru for approximately €55,000 along with a Cartier bracelet, intending to sell it at a profit.

However, after hearing from various sources about the limited availability of such watches, he grew suspicious and began to doubt its authenticity. A local watch shop suggested that alterations may have been made to the case, fueling his belief that he had been duped.

In November 2025, acting on his suspicions, Singh traveled to Singapore and attempted to sell the watch at a local retail outlet. He sought to exchange it for three other Rolexes and even used a forged copy of his passport to disguise his identity during the transaction.

Following the attempted sale, the shop owner raised concerns about the watch's authenticity and alerted the authorities. Singh attempted to escape Singapore but was apprehended at Changi Airport.

The situation took a surprising turn when the watch was examined by an official Rolex service center, which confirmed its authenticity. Despite there being no financial loss, the court maintained that Singh's deliberate attempt at deceit warranted his conviction, showcasing the legal principle of an impossible crime.
