Landslide Threat at Old Fort Leads to Shelter Order

Landslide Threat at Old Fort Leads to Shelter Order

Post by : Shweta

In British Columbia, officials have implemented a shelter-in-place directive for residents living close to the Old Fort area following the discovery of worrying signs indicating instability at a previously known landslide site. Residents are advised to remain indoors and minimize unnecessary movements as concerns for safety grow.

This precautionary measure comes after evident cracking was reported at the historic Old Fort landslide site, situated roughly five kilometres south of Fort St. John. The newly observed cracks point to possible ground shifts, heightening the risk that the slope might move further, endangering homes and local infrastructure.

Consequently, authorities have closed Old Fort Road, the primary access route for the community. Emergency Info BC has communicated that individuals in the affected area are required to stay sheltered until it is safe to reopen the road. Officials have emphasized that this action is essential for safeguarding lives as evaluations are carried out.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit plans to conduct a comprehensive technical assessment of the site before deciding on the road’s reopening. Though officials recognize the inconvenience caused by the road closure, they maintain that the safety of the public is paramount.

Collaboration among various agencies, including the Peace River Regional District and the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, is focused on monitoring the current landslide, ensuring resident safety, and strategizing for restoring road access when conditions permit.

The history of the Old Fort region indicates a pattern of landslide incidents. In 2018, a significant slide disrupted the only access road for the community of approximately 150 residents, necessitating evacuations. The situation deteriorated in 2020, as heavy rains caused additional movement, leading to further road damage.

In light of this history, officials are handling the present circumstances with utmost vigilance. Residents should stay informed through official platforms and review their emergency preparedness strategies. Monitoring at the site continues, and information will be updated as it becomes available.

This situation underscores the persistent dangers faced by communities situated near unstable areas, particularly in regions vulnerable to landslides driven by diverse weather and geological factors.
