Global Leaders Urge Support for UNRWA Amid Gaza Crisis

At the United Nations General Assembly, top diplomats and UN officials have made urgent appeals for international support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), highlighting its indispensable role in providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians amid the ongoing Gaza crisis.

UN Chief Stresses UNRWA's Vital Role

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the critical importance of UNRWA, stating that the agency is "vital to any prospects of peace and stability in the region." He called on member states to provide political and financial support to ensure the continuation of UNRWA's operations.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Highlights Urgency

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi warned that UNRWA is facing collapse due to financial constraints. He pointed to the dire situation in Gaza, where children are starving and over 600,000 students have been out of school for two years, underscoring the agency's crucial role in delivering education and humanitarian aid.

Financial Challenges Facing UNRWA

Once the largest donor to UNRWA, the United States has significantly reduced its funding, leaving the agency with a $200 million budget deficit. This shortfall threatens the continuation of essential services, including healthcare, education, and cash assistance to millions of Palestinians across the Middle East.

Calls for International Solidarity

Diplomats from Brazil and Spain echoed the calls for support, emphasizing the need for a collective international effort to sustain UNRWA's operations. They highlighted the agency's role in maintaining stability in the region and preventing further humanitarian deterioration.

As the Gaza crisis continues, the international community faces a pivotal moment to reaffirm its commitment to humanitarian principles. Supporting UNRWA is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic necessity to foster peace and stability in the region.
